In 1997 Gary Katerfield began his long service to the orchestra as Vice President of the founding Board of Directors of Eurydice Community Orchestra of Roanoke, the original organizational name of Valley Chamber Orchestra, and as bassoonist in its inaugural concert given in January of that year. The following year Gary was featured as the soloist on Graupner’s Bassoon Concerto in G in the orchestra’s November 1998 concert.
Gary began playing bassoon in 1966. In addition to his involvement with VCO, he has performed with the Roanoke Valley Community Band, the Bedford Community Orchestra, the Winds of the Blue Ridge, and with a woodwind quintet.
Gary earned his MSCS degree at Virginia Tech and worked many years as a software analyst for GE before his retirement. He and his wife, Susan, enjoy playing bridge and ballroom dancing in their spare time.
