With only three years of experience playing double bass, Michael performed for the first time with the Valley Chamber Orchestra in the spring of 2018. Michael took up the double bass after 20-some years of playing guitar because he was looking for a new way to challenge himself musically, and bass seemed like a good choice to match his interests in jazz and bluegrass. He played guitar in a rock band in high school and college, and for a while was a frequent sight on the bass at bluegrass jam sessions around the Roanoke and New River Valleys. He can also play a little violin.
Michael works his day job at Virginia Tech, and also runs a small violin family instrument repair business on the side. He lives in Salem with his family.
